Understanding Independent Living In Sweden An Overview
Living in your own home with a disability – the experiences of people with disabilities of support from their community
The research aimed to find out what makes independent living easier or harder for people with disabilities. In particular, it focused on how people with disabilities living independently in the community access “natural community supports”. These are people who are not disability service providers, but who provide assistance, contact or companionship which enables people with disabilities to participate in their local communities.
Homeshare Australia & New Zealand Alliance- HANZA
Homeshare brings together older householders or householders with a disability who could benefit from help in the home and companionship, with people of integrity prepared to lend a hand in return for affordable accommodation. The Householder provides a bedroom and shared facilities. In exchange, the Homesharer provides approximately 10 hours per week of practical assistance such as cooking, cleaning, shopping and gardening, as well as providing company and the added security of having someone else sleeping in the home.
A Home That’s Right For Me
Through its programs and services, the Ministry of Community and Social Services helps adults with a developmental disability live, work and participate in a range of community activities, enforces support orders issued by the courts so that families get the money to which they are entitled, helps Ontarians recover from hardship and regain control of their lives.
Neighbours International
Neighbours International was founded by Patti Scott in 2009. After 14 years of successfully leading Neighbours Inc.– an innovative non-profit organization created specifically to support people with disabilities and their families in choosing and designing a life for themselves within their local towns and neighbourhoods in New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania — Patti had received many requests to establish “Neighbours” agencies in communities across the United States. Neighbours Inc’s vision is not one of expansion, but rather focusing on deeply engaging in partnering with people with disabilities, and their families and allies in the communities where they live and work.
ACL- Administration for Community Living
All people, regardless of age or disability, should be able to live independently and participate fully in their communities. Every person should have the right to make choices and to control the decisions in and about their lives. This right to self-determination includes decisions about their homes and work, as well as all the other daily choices most adults make without a second thought.
Life’s A Journey
Listening is how we discover where to go. Independent Facilitation involves supporting people with disabilities, and those who love them, in building and sustaining desirable futures. It requires a focus on listening and discovering; gathering a supportive network; connecting to people, places, and activities in the community; and accessing and managing resources that can support life in the community as citizen, worker, volunteer, neighbour, and friend.
